Working With Feminism: Curating and Exhibitions in Eastern Europe

This book makes a claim for the emancipation of Eastern European perspectives in feminist thinking and curatorial practice. As opposed to the wide and recent acclaim of feminist exhibitions in major North-American and Western European institutions, in post-socialist countries feminism is yet to be acknowledged and embraced under the conditions of new conservatism and nationalist patriarchy that pose serious obstacles to alternative and subversive ways of thinking. Although this book stands for the necessity for a shared, transnational frame of reference, it places greater emphasis on local and national frameworks of exchange. The individual case-studies presented are based on personal experiences and passionate engagement. As a consequence, they introduce different trajectories: from praxis to theory, and theory to praxis, through to performative acts of truly 'working with feminism' to reveal the rich and complex character of various curatorial practices in different parts of the ex-East bloc. --Edit András
