Kogumikku on koondatud 1991. a. Oslos toimunud meediakonverentsil «The Media in a Changing Society» peetud ettekanded. Tegemist on esimese ulatuslikuma ülevaatega Baltikumi ajakirjandusajaloost ning projekt hõlmas 22 uurijat ning teadlast eri riikidest, tipnedes Balti Meediauuringute Assotsiatsooni loomisega.
