In 1943, on the dance floor of Manhattan's El Morocco, showgirl Ann Arden meets Navy ensign Billy Grenville, the scion of New York's most aristocratic family.

Billy instantly falls in love. Much to the horror of Alice Grenville, the imperial family matriarch, Billy marries Ann. To the world, they seem the perfect couple.

One rainy night in 1955, the Grenvilles return home from a party for the Duchess of Windsor. Billy hears a scream from his wife's bedroom. He rushes to investigate - and Ann fires a shotgun into Billy Grenville's handsome face.
