Anton Chekhov, the great Russian dramatist and short-story writer, was born in 1860. Rich in mood and atmosphere, his works are famed for their psychological depth and human compassion. He wrote numerous collections and his plays include The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov died in 1904.
