The year is 2276. On the world of Titan, an outer planet of Saturn, Duncan Mackenzie many other colonists are about to leave their homeland for bicentennial celebrations on Earth. But for Duncan, the journey is also a delicate mission for himself, his family & the future of Titan.

Imperial Earth is a novel written by Arthur C. Clarke, published in time for the US bicentennial in 1976 by Ballantine Books. The original UK cloth edition (ISBN 0575020113), subtitled "A Fantasy of Love & Discord", has 38 chapters & "Acknowledgments & Notes". The later US cloth edition adds a quote from Ernest Hemingway, has 43 chapters, drops the subtitle & expands the Acknowledgements & Notes.

A later US paper edition also features an "Additional Note" about a possible biological error in the plot. The plot follows the protagonist, Duncan Makenzie, on a trip to Earth from his home on Titan, ostensibly for a diplomatic visit to the USA for its 500th birthday, but really in order to clone himself.
