Masatochi Nakayama began his study of karate-dō under Master Gichin Funakoshi and has been the chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association since 1955. Until his retirement, he was professor and director of physical education at Takushoku University, from which he graduated in 1937. A 9th degree Black Belt, he has pioneered in introducing karate-dō abroad and in developing karate as a sport.
