This book is the third volume in The Learning Teacher Network trilogyon the new role of the teacher. Together with the two previous volumes,‘Towards the Teacher as a Learner’ (2004) and ‘Learning for the Future’(2005), the three publications are to be viewed as a whole. Independentlybut coherently the publications survey conditions, components andapproaches to learning and the new role of the teacher; thereby theyalso reveal ingredients of essential continuous professional development. What is becoming clear is that professional performance ultimatelydepends on the quality of the learning that takes place within its context. The transformation of education and training in Europe is a process, where all educational players are required to contribute with their ownexpertise and competences. School development derives fromprofessionals in education and training, but must be properly supportedby changes in curricula and policies on all levels. A holistic view oneducation, agreement and common understanding of the way forwardare imperative keys to success. This volume includes the five dimensions of a conceptual framework onthe new role of the teacher, together with the supporting domains anddefinitions, as have been explored and identified by The Learning TeacherNetwork. Furthermore, the network also puts forward tenrecommendations to professionals in the European educationalcommunity and for critical European initiatives.
